Nancy Ann Shaffer

Nancy Ann Shaffer, 65, of Spencerville, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Saturday, June 22, 2024, in her home.

Nancy was born on June 5, 1959, in Lima, to Donald John and Beatrice Elizabeth (Lindeman) Kaverman.

Nancy graduated from Delphos St. John’s High School in 1977. She attended florist school at Hixon’s School of Floral Design. Nancy was rich in all the good deeds she did for others. She was a smiling face and sympathetic touch to those in need as they walked through the doors of Fettig’s Flowers for over 40 years. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church Lima where she served on various committees. Nancy enjoyed cooking meals for all of the holidays, countless trips shopping with her best friend Kathy McCollow and her monthly dinners with “the girls.”

She is survived by her father, Donald Kaverman; her husband, William “Bill” whom she married September 22, 1990, and a daughter, Calla Miller of Spencerville. Since 2018 her life has been dedicated to being the best Mimi to her grandchildren Henry and Sawyer Miller.

Also surviving are a brother, Larry Kaverman of Toledo; mother-in-law, Dorothy Shaffer of Delphos; brothers-in-law, Brent Shaffer of Spencerville and Richard (Patty) Shaffer of Delphos; niece, Cassandra (Kane) Baumgartner of Delphos, and nephew, Cory Schimmoeller of Coumbus.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice Kaverman, and father-in-law, Rex Shaffer.

Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, with a prayer service starting at 7:45 p.m. at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 27, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Spencerville with Father Hunyor officiating. Burial will take place following the service at Spencerville Cemetery.

Joe Allen Howell

Joe Allen Howell, 88, of Convoy, passed away at his home Thursday morning, June 20, 2024, surrounded by family in Crestview, Florida.

He was born on July 17, 1935, in Arcanum, to Russell “Bud” Howell and Helen Elizabeth (Owens) Howell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Clarabelle Howell; two brothers, Larry and Ralph, and his former spouse, Delores “Dee” Howell (Simpson).

A stranger to none and welcoming to all who called him family, Joe was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his children, Wayne A. (Christina) Howell, Yvonne K. (Brian) Phillips, and Elizabeth O. Howell; a brother, Tom Howell; grandchildren, Marcus A. (Anissia) Howell, Elizabeth, Cheyenne, Sadie, Dakota “Skye”, Cassandra; great-grandchildren, Miles, Hayes, Alester, and Ellie, as well as countless nieces and nephews.

After graduating from The Ohio State University in 1953, Joe taught generations of local Van Wert County and Mercer County high school students, remaining an avid high school sports fan and devoted Buckeye until his death. He enjoyed spending his free time volunteering at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center, The Salvation Army, and the Recycling Center of Van Wert.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. Calling hours will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Friday, with private interment to be held at a later date.

Preferred memorials: the Salvation Army of Van Wert.

Marcia Lou (Hoy) Priest

Marcia Lou (Hoy) Priest passed away at Vancrest Skilled Nursing facility surrounded by family on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

She was born September 19, 1944, in Van Wert, to Burton Hoy and Loma (Dunlap) Hoy, who both preceded her in death.

Marcia was also preceded in death by a sister, Phyliss (Hoy) Max, and grandson Tyler Priest.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bob, whom she married on December 2, 1962, in Grover Hill; her daughters, Robin Priest, of Glenmore and Rhonda (Jeff) Cunningham of Bluffton, Indiana; her son, Bob (Karlene) Priest of Van Wert; her sister, Greta (John) Szabo. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Carsan, Hunter, and Dalton Cunningham, Ericka (Casey) Gibson, Reagan and Cassie Priest, two step-grandchildren: Tyler (Haley) Williams and Morgan (Taylor) Guinther, as well as two great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

Her life was marked by a profound dedication to her family and her passion for horses. As a devoted 4-H advisor, Marcia inspired many young minds, sharing her expertise and love for horses. Her accomplishments in showing her horses is a testament to her dedication and love for the animal, earning her numerous awards over the years. Marcia especially loved cross-country trail riding as she found joy and peace in exploring the outdoors on horseback. Her adventures on the trails were as much about the journey as they were about the destination and competition. Bob and Marcia began racing thoroughbreds in the 1980’s and continue to own and race today.

Professionally, Marcia dedicated the majority of her life to working as a bookkeeper for a family owned business, Ed Bolton and Sons. Her unwavering commitment made her an invaluable asset to the company and throughout the years a member of the family. She later retired from Wortman Brothers, concluding a distinguished career marked by integrity and excellence. Above all Marcia’s greatest accomplishment was the love and care she poured into her family and friends. Her warm heart, unwavering support, and selfless dedication were the cornerstone of her life, leaving a mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of love, strength, and passion will continue to inspire and guide her loved ones for generations to come.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 1, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert. Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Van Wert Woodland Cemetery.

Preferred memorials may be directed to Wesley Church or to the Van Wert County 4-H Exchange Club.

Shawn Michael Kimmet

Shawn Michael Kimmet, of Delphos put his kickstand down for the final time the evening of Thursday, June 20, 2024, after a year long journey with brain cancer. He was surrounded in his home by his loving family and friends.

He was born with his twin sister, Dawn Richelle on July 24, 1971, in Lima to Robert C. and Susan M. (Nagel) Kimmet who both survive in Delphos. Dawn preceded him home to the arms of Jesus February 21, 1973. He married his “person” and best friend Kimberly (Gillespie) Kimmet on July 11, 2020, and she survives in Delphos. Shawn also gained the honorary title of Padre to three stepsons on that day. Connor Army of Cridersville, Corbin Army of Van Wert and Colson Army of Delphos.

Also surviving are his brother, Ryan M. Kimmet and his wife Crystal K (Voorhees) Kimmet; two nephews, Logan B. Kimmet and his wife Justine P. (Cook) Kimmet and Blake R. Kimmet all of Delphos. He is also survived by many family members who will all miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Carl M. Kimmet and Margaret R. (Hickey) Kimmet Bellman; paternal step-grandfather, John Bellman; maternal grandparents, Arnold G. (Dutch) Nagel and Alice B. (Kill) Nagel, and cousin Justin Runser.

Shawn was a 1990 graduate of Delphos St. John’s and attended University of Toledo where he attained a bachelor of business administration degree. He resided in Toledo for many years after graduation, was employed in banking positions and moved back to Delphos in 2006. For the last 17 years he was employed by Unverferth Manufacturing in both Kalida and Delphos where he was a welder but was best known far and wide for his exceptional talent as DJ for his own business All Occasions Professional DJ Service. Over 28 years he provided the very best for countless couples on their special day and took pride in making it absolutely perfect for them, as he did in everything he did. He also provided his service as the resident DJ at the I Don’t Care Grill in Van Wert during the years it was in operation.

Shawn loved spending time with his family, working on the house and landscaping and wanted to make it a perfect place to call home. His love of riding his Harley was known by everyone and was a big part of his life, if just riding around town, in poker runs or on multi state trips with friends. He never met a stranger that didn’t immediately become a friend and was loved deeply by all who knew him. Shawn brought an infectious smile and light into the room that lasted even after he left and his absence will not only be felt by his family but he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Weber Funeral Home, Delphos. Funeral services will be held at the same location at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29. There will be a luncheon immediately following the service on Saturday at the Eagles in Delphos. The family also asks for anyone wanting to come together for a celebration of life in honor of Shawn to join them starting at 5 p.m. Saturday also at the Eagles. This will be to share in lots of laughs and stories just as Shawn would want from all those who knew and loved him so very deeply. There will be a cash bar/food available at this time.

In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or to the charity of choice.

Stephen Michael Wood

Stephen Michael Wood, 73, of Van Wert, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2024, at his residence.

He was born on July 31, 1950, to John and Winnie (Honaker) Wood, in War, West Virginia.

He was an owner-operator of Steve Wood Trucking, LLC and retired from Wolverine Packing Company. Steve also worked on the railroad for several years after his service in the United States Army. Steve was a vehicle enthusiast and a true wheeler-dealer. From car lots to back roads, if it caught his eye, it became his project. His vision extended to buildings and houses. Steve’s keen aesthetic transformed the broken into something beautiful.

Throughout his life, several animals were lucky to have a home with Steve as each was considered one of his own. Steve carried a pocket full of quick wit and stories that would bring a smile to anyone’s face. His generous nature didn’t know a stranger but if you were his true friend, you were his family.

He is survived by his three children, Jennifer L. Wood, Amanda M. Wood, and Matthew S. Wood, all of Van Wert; his grandchildren, Deven Detwiler, Karlee Detwiler, Lanee Wood, and Jacksen Stemen; a brother, Ray Wood of Winchester, Kentucky, and a sister, Jane May of Scottsdale, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, Richard, John and Kenneth Wood; and sisters, Gladys Quercio and Marvin Smith.

Visitation will be held from 1-6 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, Van Wert. Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation at 6 p.m. A graveside burial service will be held at a later date.

Steve was a life member of the V.F.W. in Van Wert. A celebration of Steve Wood’s life will be held at the V.F.W. from 6-10 p.m. Friday, June 28.

Dinah Ann Mitchell

Dinah Ann Mitchell passed away June 18, 2024, at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center, at the age of 63.

She was born to Howard and Anna (Rack) Mitchell on March 8, 1961, and graduated from Springfield High School in 1979.

For over 25 years Dinah worked in management for various retail stores. Her free time was spent outdoors gardening, playing with her four dogs, and fixing up her house. Handy to the core, Dinah was willing to help her family when something needed fixing. She loved Diet Mountain Dew with an occasional salty snack, but hosting her family for the holidays and special occasions was her favorite.

Her fiancé Randy Miller and his children (Dan, Autumn, Amber) were an important part of her life.

Preceding her in heaven is her father, Howard Mitchell.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Nicole (Dave) and Melisa (Josh); grandchildren, Gracie, Hope, Evan, Ava and Zoe; mother, Anna; sisters, Darlene (Scott), Doris (Ron), and niece Kat.

Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Walker Funeral Home, 7438 Airport Hwy, Holland, Ohio, followed by a funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Springfield Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests a contribution toward the animal shelter of their choice.

John F. “Jack” Aurand

John F. “Jack” Aurand, 87, of Van Wert, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Vancrest of Van Wert.

He was born September 4,1936, in Toledo, to Merle J. and Naomi C. (Greenler) Aurand, who both preceded him in death.

A 1954 graduate of Van Wert High School, Jack spent his career working at General Dynamics, Chrysler, and National Seal, ultimately retiring from the Lima Tank Plant.

In February, 1959, Jack married Jona B. Runnion and together they raised two sons, Guy and Michael Aurand. She preceded him in death in 2010.

In his retirement years, he attended St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with his significant other, Joan Blankemeyer.

Jack was a loving father to Michael S. (Becky) Aurand and Guy A. Aurand, and a doting grandfather to Zack (Shiloe) Aurand and Sarah (John) Fay. His family was expanded with the arrival of his great-grandchild, Zoey Kolika Fay, who brought great joy to his life.

In addition to his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Aurand.

The family would like to share their gratitude to Joan Blankemeyer and her family for the love and care shown to Jack during his later years.

A memorial mass will be held in the fall at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Friends and family will be welcomed to join the funeral services in memory of John’s life and legacy.

Iva Lou Owens

Iva Lou Owens, 92, passed away Monday morning, June 17, 2024 at her residence in rural Van Wert.

She was born on November 2, 1931, in Paulding County, the daughter of Elmer E. and Betty M. (Waldron) Laukhuf, who both preceded her in death. She married Edward Ervin Owens on August 19, 1950, and he preceded her in death on June 4, 2019.

Family survivors include her three sons, Brad (Marsha) Owens of Convoy, Kevan (Susan) Owens of Van Wert, and Stan (Susan) Owens of Convoy; a sister, Patricia (David) Greulach of Haviland; seven grandchildren, Travis (Miriam) Owens, Jared (Sara) Owens, Greg (Kim) Owens, Julie (Chris) Moir, Ashley Owens, Laura (Frankie) Bowen and Nathan Owens; 17 great- grandchildren, and sisters-in-law, Charlotte Laukhuf of Haviland and Joyce Owens of Van Wert.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Vivian Elizabeth Owens and two brothers, Larry E. Laukhuf and Willard Laukhuf, Jr.

Iva Lou was a 1949 graduate of Haviland High School where she was the class salutatorian. She was an outstanding athlete being a cheerleader and playing softball in high school and then in church leagues beyond school. She was a homemaker and farmer and enjoyed raising livestock, canning, gardening and baking pies. Iva Lou was a former member of the Convoy United Brethren Church and later attended Sugar Ridge Church of God in Convoy. She served as a Crestview Bible Board member for many years. She always enjoyed sports and loved to watch her grandkids participate in their many activities.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 20, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, with Rev. Wayne Kargas officiating. Interment will follow at Convoy I. O. O. F. Cemetery. Calling hours are 11 a.m. until time of service on Thursday.

Linda Metz

Linda Metz, 75, of Rockford, passed away at 7:20 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2024, at her home with her family.

Linda was born on September 18, 1948, in Van Wert to Waldo (Whitey) and Mary Ellen (Custer) Stetler, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Donita Loucks and a stepson, Steven Eugene Metz.

Linda graduated from Ohio City Liberty in 1966. Linda married Ron Metz in 1985.

Survivors include three sons, Trace Glosette of Celina, Tom (Amy) Lyons of Rockford, and Chip (Amy) Lyons also of Rockford; stepson, Tim (Melissa) Metz of Rockford, and two stepdaughters, Stephanie George of Ohio City and Tami Metz (Jeremy Kline) of St. Marys; grandchildren, Skylar Glosette, Sam Glosette (Justin Kelsey), Cody (Sierra) Glosette, Hayden Lyons, Conner Lyons, Rylan Lyons, Parker Lyons, Branson Lyons, Preslie Lyons, Brooks Lyons, Jordan (Olivia) Bair, Austin Metz, and Andy Metz; numerous great-grandchildren and a brother, Gary (Ann) Stetler of Delphos.

Linda worked at several different places including Federal Mogul, GE Decatur, Mercer Health Hospital and Van Wert County Hospital. She was a very hard worker. Linda loved to shop and also peruse garage sales looking for bargains. She was always thinking of others and what they could use. Linda attended Olive Branch Church of God of Rockford.

Friends may call from 12-4 p.m. Sunday June 23, at Cowan and Sons Funeral Home, Van Wert.

Donald R. Fisher Sr.

Donald R. Fisher Sr. went to his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at his residence.

He was a man of many talents and passions. Born on April 10, 1936, in Lima, to Edgar Leroy and Gertrude (Jones) Fisher, who both preceded him in death, he graduated from Lima Central High School and later married the love of his life, Gloria Leghart, on July 22, 1961.

Don proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was known by many as a dedicated machinist and the “big fish”, working in the tool crib for Chrysler for 36 years. He was a longtime member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370 in Lima.

His hobbies included woodworking, fixing things around the house, deer hunting, and watching John Wayne Westerns. Don was a loyal fan of the Chicago Bears and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and always cheered on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. Donald had a special talent for whistling like a train, and he loved to impart his wisdom and life lessons on his grandchildren. Upon retirement from Chrysler, he continued working as a third shift stocker at Walmart, a role he embraced with dedication and enthusiasm.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Julie (Jeff) Reidt of Van Wert; Mark (Debbie) Fisher of Shawnee, Cynthia (Jeremy) Bragg of Delphos, and Jennifer Fisher of Delphos; daughter-in-law, Jackie Fisher of Delphos, as well as nine grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gloria Fisher; sons, Donald Fisher Jr and Matthew “Buzz” Fisher; daughter-in-law, Carol Fisher; sisters, Edna Fisher, Jeanette Young, Susie Stephenson, Juanita Budd, Eleanor Lepley, Betty Ruckel, Glenna Walters; brothers, Bob Fisher and Ed Fisher.

Don and Gloria will be laid to rest together at Dayton National Cemetery at a later date.
