Idaho State Police Presents Silver StarOn January 4th, 2024, the Power County Sheriff’s Office initiated a pursuit during which the suspect vehicle collided with several uninvolved cars, lost control, and then drove against traffic on Interstate 86. Law enforcement attempted a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver. However, the suspect vehicle entered the median and reversed direction, heading eastbound in the westbound lanes, creating a highly dangerous situation for the public.Idaho State Police Corporal Travis Gurney responded to assist in the pursuit and heard the radio updates indicating the suspect was traveling at a high rate of speed against traffic. As Cpl. Gurney approached the area, he noted numerous vehicles driving towards the fleeing suspect. Recognizing the imminent danger, he activated his emergency lights and cleared traffic from the left lane, including a Pocatello Rapid Transit bus. Within seconds, Cpl. Gurney exemplified the highest standard of duty by courageously slowing his patrol car and positioning it directly in the path of the oncoming suspect vehicle, facing the full force of danger. With precise steering, he turned his wheel 90 degrees at the last moment and redirected the crash impact to the passenger side of his vehicle, thereby avoiding a head-on collision. This maneuver forced the suspect’s vehicle off the roadway and away from other traffic.Despite his disabled vehicle, Cpl. Gurney exited and assisted other officers in apprehending the suspect. The next day, a bus rider visited the district office to thank “the brave trooper,” and the bus driver also called to express appreciation for the trooper’s actions that prevented a collision with his bus. These testimonials highlight the significant impact of Cpl. Gurney’s actions to protect the bus passengers and the public while preventing the suspect from continuing his dangerous behavior.Today, Corporal Travis Gurney was presented the Silver Star in recognition of his heroic actions in the face of danger, which reflect law enforcement’s highest tradition of selfless service and courage.#ThisIsHowWeServe

As Labor Day weekend approaches, Idaho State Police (ISP) is intensifying efforts to reduce impaired driving incidents statewide. In a united front, ISP, in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies and the Idaho Office of Highway Safety (OHS), is increasing patrols through Labor Day weekend to ensure Idaho’s roads are safe for all motorists.Labor Day weekend coincides with the conclusion of the “100 Deadliest Days,” a period that begins on Memorial Day and ends on Labor Day, marked by a significant increase in traffic fatalities due to impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving. This year, the state has seen a large number of fatal crashes during this period, but law enforcement remains determined to change that trajectory.“As we approach the end of summer, our focus remains on saving lives by getting impaired drivers off the road,” said Colonel Bill Gardiner, Director of ISP. “We want to remind everyone that choosing to drive under the influence is not only illegal but can have tragic consequences.”While Idaho has seen a decrease in fatalities compared to the same period last year, OHS statistics show that 70* lives have been lost on our roads this summer, down from 79 last summer. This decline signals progress, but the numbers are still alarmingly high. So far this year, 145* people have died in traffic crashes, whereas 275 died throughout 2023, marking it the deadliest year in over a decade.“Every loss of life is a tragedy, and impaired driving can be prevented,” Gardiner continued. “Our troopers are out in full force to prevent these crashes, but we can’t do it alone. We urge every driver to make the right choice—don’t drive impaired and ensure your loved ones don’t either. Together, we can make Idaho’s roads safer.”Law enforcement encourages all Idahoans to be proactive by arranging alternative transportation if they plan to drink. Additional tips include:- Plan ahead: Designate a sober driver before you start drinking.- Use a ride-share service: Apps like Uber or Lyft can be life-saving resources.- Stay overnight: If you’re at a friend’s house, consider spending the night.- Look out for others: If you see someone attempting to drive impaired, take their keys and help them find a safe way home.- Buckle up: Always wear your seatbelt. It’s not just a rule – it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.*Fatality numbers are preliminary and subject to change.
